The Beginning

Xavier Guild joined Cruiser Milwaukee in 2021, based out of Wausau, Wisconsin. He joined for the same reason most cadets do: he wanted more. More discipline, more structure, more real-world experience than anything a classroom could provide. What he got was all of that — and something he didn't expect: a community that would push him to his limits and celebrate every inch of his growth.

Challenges Overcome

Early in his Sea Cadet career, Guild barely passed the Physical Readiness Test at Recruit Training. Drill instructors were demanding. The standards were high. A lesser cadet might have quit. Xavier didn't — he leaned in. He began treating every obstacle as data: what was hard told him exactly where to work harder.

That mindset led him across the world. He earned an NSLI-Y scholarship to study abroad in Taiwan, pursued advanced cybersecurity training, and continued traveling hours each way from Wausau to Milwaukee — every single drill weekend — because he knew the investment was worth it.

What Made the Difference

Guild credits the camaraderie, the volunteer leadership, and the program's focus on real skills — tactical drills, financial literacy workshops, cyber defense — for shaping who he became. "Real-world practical experiences" weren't just a phrase for him. They were the reason he drove hours to be there.

Three Appointments, One Choice

When the results came in, Xavier Guild had earned appointments to three military academies: the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and West Point. He chose West Point. Not the easiest path — the one most aligned with where he knew he was going.
