Your Questions
No. There is absolutely no service obligation associated with the Naval Sea Cadet Corps. The program is completely voluntary. That said, cadets who reach E-3 rank gain the benefit of advanced entry into any branch of the Armed Forces should they choose to enlist — but this is a reward, not a requirement. Many of our cadets go on to college, civilian careers, and leadership roles in all walks of life.
Naval Sea Cadets (Cruiser Milwaukee Division) are between the ages of 13 and 17. Navy League Cadets (Training Ship Van Valkenburg) are between the ages of 10 and 13. League Cadets train alongside Sea Cadets at the same drill location but follow a separate, age-appropriate academic program. When League Cadets turn 13, they may transition into the full Sea Cadet program.
Cadets are instructed by military personnel (active, reserve, and retired), by senior cadets, and by dedicated adult civilian volunteer leaders. All instructors serve voluntarily without compensation. Every adult leader undergoes a criminal background check before working with cadets.
Monthly drills occur one Saturday–Sunday per month, typically 0800–1500 at The Richardson School in Brookfield. Beyond that, cadets participate in academic correspondence courses at their own pace, community service opportunities, and optional summer/winter advanced trainings lasting 5–14 days. The program is significant but designed to work alongside school and family life.
The enrollment fee is $275 and there is an annual renewal fee of $175. Advanced training courses carry separate fees, but these are significantly lower than comparable summer camp experiences — and the quality far exceeds typical youth programs. Yes. As the only Department of Defense-sponsored youth program, Sea Cadets are entitled to wear regulation Navy uniforms. Uniforms remain Navy property and must be returned upon exiting the program. This is part of what makes the program meaningful — wearing the uniform is a privilege that cadets earn and take seriously.
No child shall be denied enrollment on the basis of a medical or physical disability. We review each case individually and work to accommodate the needs of every cadet who demonstrates the character and commitment to serve. Contact us directly to discuss your child's specific circumstances — we welcome that conversation.
