GSM2 Zachary Baltutis
Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) Second Class · USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81) · Nine countries in three years
"Achieving Command Chief Petty Officer helped me realize I'm capable of so much more than I expected. It prepared me for larger leadership roles."
Starting the Journey
Zachary Baltutis arrived at Cruiser Milwaukee with a singular purpose: preparing himself for Navy service. He described his first drill as "a feeling of a new beginning — something unknown but exciting." That excitement never faded — it transformed into discipline.
Early specialized training in areas like Master-at-Arms school strengthened his teamwork and communication skills. Reaching the rank of Command Chief Petty Officer of the entire division was the turning point that changed how he saw himself and what he believed he could accomplish.
Mentors & Influences
GMC Schmidt left a lasting mark on Zachary's development. As a prior Navy officer, Schmidt offered the kind of mentorship that only comes from lived experience — practical guidance on what to expect, how to lead, and how to carry yourself in every situation the fleet would throw at him.
Prepared for the Fleet
When Zachary arrived at Navy Boot Camp, his Recruit Division Commanders noticed immediately. On day one, he executed every drill movement with flawless precision. They were impressed — but Zachary wasn't surprised. He'd done it hundreds of times before, in Brookfield, Wisconsin, in a Navy uniform, with Cruiser Milwaukee.
Life in the Navy
Today, Zachary supervises the forward engine room aboard a guided missile destroyer — managing safety for over 70 personnel. His service has taken him to nine countries in three years. He plans a 20-year naval career and credits his rapid advancement directly to the foundation laid at Cruiser Milwaukee.
"This is one of the best opportunities to grow. Even if you don't join the military afterward, it will help you in life. The benefits far outweigh the cons. You'll be stronger, more resilient, and more prepared for whatever comes next."
"To do my work and know I'm protecting my country's safety and freedom is one of the best feelings in the world."
