The Beginning

Mitchell King came to Cruiser Milwaukee with military service already on his mind. Fellow cadet Ethan Harper made the introduction, but the direction was never really in question. He wanted structure, real experience, and a program that would take him seriously. Sea Cadets delivered.

What the Program Taught Him

King's most formative experience wasn't a training he attended — it was one he helped run. Staffing recruit training gave him a ground-level view of what leadership actually produces. He watched new cadets arrive raw and leave capable. That growth, up close, was what made it real.

What the program built in him goes deeper than any single skill. "Sea Cadets showed me good leadership and bad leadership," he says, "and gave me valuable experience and the work ethic needed to be successful." That combination — seeing both sides, and being held to a real standard — is something no classroom replicates.

What Comes Next

King enlisted in the Army National Guard as an 09R Officer Cadet, a track designed specifically for ROTC students on the path to a commission. He'll attend the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, majoring in Criminology, on a full-ride Minuteman Scholarship, while completing ROTC to earn his commission as an officer. The foundation is built. The path is clear.

To Anyone on the Fence

"I would tell them to just give it a chance," King says. "I feel like lots of people are hesitant and don't fully commit. If you give real effort toward trying something new, you'll see the value in it." The program rewards the people who show up ready to work. Give it that, and it gives back more than you expect.
